He took the league by storm last season due to his mesmerising skills on the ball. Baingana was instrumental in helping Express FC win its first league title in 16 years scoring a few goals from midfield as well as creating many.
He was voted the sponsors’ favourite player of the season and his sole effort goal against SC Villa in the 2-0 win in a league match played at Namboole in the first half of the season won the accolade for the goal of the season.
His talent and displays last season earned him a national team summon on the Amavubi Stars of Rwanda and he is currently an integral part of the nation’s junior side “The Junior Wasps”.
His main assets are speed and ability to dribble past even the best of defenders. In our “Know your USL Star” this Friday, we unveil the Rwandan international. Let’s get started:
Name: Bonny Baingana Mbonye
Date of Birth: 07th/05/1994
Current Club: Express FC (2011 – present)
Previous clubs: Kampala Junior Team (KJT) and Luzira United
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Shirt Number: 11
Why Shirt Number 11? I have less attachment to the jersey number but I just found myself donning it at Express FC. However, my preferred shirt numbers are 10 and 7. I like shirt 10 because of Ronaldinho and Messi while my love for shirt 7 dates back from my school days.
I found a lot of success donning that jersey number.
Club supported: On the local scene, I grew up supporting SC Villa and it was my love for Hakim Magumba that drew me to the club. Besides, the Villa Park side enjoyed a lot of success during that time. However, I have also developed love for Express FC since I feel Wankulukuku is my home at the moment.
Internationally, I love Barcelona so much since its players make football look an easy sport yet it’s not.
Who inspired you to play football? My love for the sport is just natural. I grew up loving the game and persisted even when my guardians refused me to play the game. Nevertheless, my admiration for Brazilian legend Ronaldo Dalima also inspired me more to take the game serious.
My Idol: Barcelona and Argentina play maker Lionel Messi is and will always be my greatest idol. I like that boy so much.
Best player played with: SC Victoria University midfielder Sadam Ibrahim Juma is the best player I have ever played with. We used to have a good combination while at school (Progressive Secondary School Kitintale) and believe me, this guy has got talent.
Another player is my former team mate at Express FC, Yayo Lutimba.
Toughest Opponent: Surprisingly, the toughest opponent I have ever faced is neither a super league nor a Bell super league player. He plays football for leisure over the weekend. His name is Kigongo. That guy is the only player ever to give me hard time in football.
Favourite Meal: Rice, Beans and Chicken soup.
Favourite Music: Slow and gospel music.
Wheels: I don’t drive at the moment but my dream car is a Range Rover Sport.
Best Comedian: Amarula Family’s Amooti is in the class of his own when it comes to cracking jokes. Even when he is not acting, a mere look in his eyes cracks your ribs.
Best T.V program: I like watching the Lunch sports show on NBS TV and Agataliiko Nfuufu.
My biggest dream: My biggest dream at the moment is playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues and am confident I will achieve this since I work hard and i have a lot of determination.
In the next five years: I see myself playing professional football in Europe or Asia and God Willing, I will achieve this.
