Following a dangerous tackle he made during their match against Uganda Cranes at the Safaricom Sevens at the Nyayo National Stadium, Uganda Kobs’ player Bishop Onen will serve a four-week suspension and will not take part in any rugby match worldwide.
Onen made the dangerous spear tackle on his opponent Charles Chamdia at Sunday’s bowl quarterfinal match, which Uganda Cranes won 21-14. “The ban was too harsh,” Onen, who did not appeal against the decision told Kenya’s local press. “It should have been restricted only to the Safaricom 7s games and not any other games.” he argued.
“The player spanned out of hand and I did not have any control on how he was going to land. The decision was a little too harsh for me,” said Onen. The decision that was taken by the organizers will force the MTN Heathens full back winger to miss three league matches in the Ugandan Rugby Union league.
Kobs team manager, Timothy Mudoola also defended Onen arguing the tackle was not intentional. “We have been served by the verdict but I can categorically say that the tackle was not intentional and no malice intended,” Mudoola said.
Mudoola added that the suspension will only affect (Onen) to the extent that he will not take part in any rugby match adding that he will continue training together with the team.
