Ugandan franchise side Rwenzori Warriors hoped to return home with both trophies but their stone landed on the T20 East Africa Premier League crown on Saturday.
The Lawrence Sematimba-led side chased Kongonis’ 119 runs to reach 120 with four balls to spare. Thanks Roger Mukasa’s 25 off 34 in addition to Ronald Semanda (12) and vice-captain Charles Waiswa (15) partnership that won the game. The side walked away with Shs22.3m.
High spirits were carried into Sunday’s East Africa Cup 50-over final against another Kenyan side Coast Peeke but the Warriors fell short of victory. Mukasa hit a half ton of 70 runs including 12 boundaries while veteran Micheal Ndiko added 35 as Warriors were all out for 220 runs in 46.3 overs.
But Coast Peeke utilized the backing from the home crowd at the Nairobi Gymkhana Oval to reach 221 runs for a three wicket loss in 20 overs from I.A Karim’s unbeaten 82 runs while Morris Ouma stroked 60. Jonathan Sebanja snared two wickets for 12 runs. “As a team, we did our best. It was always going to be difficult to beat two Kenyan teams at their home,”
“We felt a couple of umpiring decisions did not go our way that might have changed the result.” Warriors’ bowler Brian Masaba told Kawowo Sports.
