University League

Makerere University were held to a 1-1 draw by Nkumba University at their own grounds.

Nkumba were the better side in the first quarter, though found them selves 1-0 down at the interval after Moses Ssemanda put the hosts into the lead in only 14 minutes.

Nkumba became more dominate over Makerere who latter conceded 25th –minute equaliser after Faizal Muwawo rifled home from just inside the box.

The result extends Makerere and Nkumba’s unbeaten start to the season, though both have now drawn only one game of their opening two University League fixtures. Mahad Mbaziira tested Ronald Mutebi from distance early on, but it was Nkumba who enjoyed the better start to the game with Fred Umony let down by a heavy touch which ended in the keepers hands.

Vicent Onyango lashed in to the goal keepers hands as Nkumba looked to capitalise on their early domination but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock, with Moses Ssemanda powering home after some questionable defence keeping from the back four.

As the first half drew to a close Samson Kiirya went close to making amends after tipping Faizal Muwawo’s firce drive over the bar with Nkumba close to doubling their

goal.

Samson Kiirya also commented on the visitors’ stirring comeback, and was delighted by the way they played. “We played first half showing that we needed the game even the first game was like that and our players always loose focus in the second half of the game” said Makerere team captain Kiirya. But he promises best in the next game.

Nkumba team coach Patrick Ssebuliba said “We felt comfortable at all times, we dominated the match, but sometimes it can get complicated and we have to show our character – and that’s what we did,” he said.

And above all getting that much more needed point that can help us clinch the league trophy was vital for us he stated.
