
Jackson Kiprop clocked 1:02:05 to settle for seventh position as Uganda men’s senior team finished fifth overall at the 20th IAAF World half marathon held in Karvana, Bulgaria on Saturday.
It was a significant improvement for the 25-year-old having finished 33rd at the 2009 edition in Birmingham. Fellow teammates Nathan Ayeko (1:03:54) and Solomon Mutai (1:04:21) took 19th and 26th positions respectively as the three-man side won
prize money worth $6,000 (Shs.15.4m).
Eritrean Zersenay Tadese defended his title, recording his fifth win at the event in six years. Tadese, the world record holder crossed the finish line first in 1:00:19. In the women’s category, on her return to the international scene, Adero Nyakisi finished 28th in a season best time of 1:15:26.
The race was won by Ethiopian Meseret Hailu Debele in a personal best time of 1:08:55. Debele’s compatriot Boru Feyse Tadese took second position after running a season best of 1:08:56. The next edition of the tournament will be held on March 29, 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
