Ugandan export to the Kenyan Premier League Daniel ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuma says that winning the league title with Gor Mahia is more important to him than winning the golden boot.
Speaking to Kawowo Sports in the aftermath of his side’s 4-0 win over Muhoroni Youth FC, the former Express FC striker said;
“It would rather I lift the league title than winning the golden boot”, he said. “Every striker dreams of winning that boot at least once in a life time but if you ask me to chose between the league title and the boot, I would automatically prefer the former”.
The KKL product scored a stunning hat trick in the match played at City Stadium on Sunday afternoon to take his league tally to 17 goals thus making him joint leading scorer with Sofapaka marks man John Baraza.
On his team’s chances of lifting the title they last won in 1995, Sserunkuma said that the ball is in their court now but admitted that it’s not over until it’s over.
“We can’t afford to slip up. We have one game left to play at home to Thika United and our aim to collect maximum points. We can only celebrate triumph after that game”, he added.
Gor Mahia currently leads the table standings in the Tusker Premier League on 58 points just one above Tusker and AFC Leopards who are separated by goals in second and third place.
If he manages to win the title at Gor, Sserunkuma will join Ugandans Timothy Ayiekho and Abbey Nasur who won league titles at the club between 1980 – 1984 a feat he is desperate to achieve.
“I want to join that list”, he said. “I respect the two men and would like to join them in the history of the club”.
On his current form that has seen him net 12 league since joining K’ogalo in June this year, the diminutive forward attributes it to his team mates, technical team and the fans.
“It’s all about my team mates and the technical team plus the fans who support this lovely club”, he concluded.
