Uganda dominated most of the events and the national anthem was sung five out of the six times at the 2012 MTN Kampala Marathon but not for the men’s 42km race. It was simply a Kenyan affair. Kangor Domenic Kimwetich proved to be the real deal as he beat three other Kenyans to the 42km finish line.
He clocked two hours 15mins 59seconds as he crossed the tape in front of revelers at the pavilion of Kololo Airstrip on Sunday morning. Having led for most the race, he kept calm and unrivalled till finish. David Tarus Kiptui took second while Gilbert Masai took third.
But the foreign elite did not see any other joy as Ugandan runners took the biggest share. Immaculate Chemutai won the women’s 42km after a hard fought battle with the Kenyans. “The Kenyans gave me hard time but I thank God. I train with them in Kenya so I knew what to do,” she said.
“I know them very well. I took advantage of their weakness to beat them. I sprinted from 100m to win the race.” Chemutai was seventh in the 2004 edition of the marathon.
