Burundi 5-1 Somalia
Sam Ssimbwa’s job as Somalia Coach started on a low note after his side was humiliated by Burundi with a 5-1 defeat in their opening match of group B at Namboole Stadium. A brace a piece from Chris Nduwagira and Sulemani Ndikumana and a strike from Yusuf Ndikumana was all Burundi needed to get to a winning start while the Ocean Stars got one back through Mohammad Jabril who converted from the spot.
Somalia started the game on a bright note and should have gone ahead in the opening exchanges but were denied by the post. They were later punished by Yusuf Ndikumana whose two goals ensured the Burundians went into the recess with 2-0 up.
After recess, Somalia continued to put up a fighting spirit and were paid in kind when Ugandan referee Ali Kalyango pointed to the spot after Burundi custodian Ndiwimana fouled Jabril in the forbidden area. He picked himself up to send the goalie the wrong side and offer hope to the Ocean Stars.
However, the faint hope they had later vanished when Chris Nduwagira got a brace and later Yusuf Ndikumana to complete the rout.
The victory pushed Burundi on top of the group with three points and a goal difference of four; two better than Tanzania who beat Sudan 2-0. You can click here to see the upcoming fixtures and previous results
