Ugandan youth weightlifter Jamil Lubega was named Uspa Sports Personality of last month after winning an inddividual gold and two silver medals at the Africa Youth Weightlifting Championships in Tunisia between November 18-25.
He polled 605 votes to defeat men’s volleyball side Nemo Stars to the Nile Special gong. Lubega managed to lift a total of 218 kg in the 69 kg category. He lifted 95kg in the snatch and then 123kg in the clean and jerk to win a silver medal.
George Aporu’s Nemo Stars were beaten by only 50 votes. This was the second time a weightlifter was winning the monthly recognition from Uspa after youngster Charles Ssekyaaya.
Ssekyaaya represented Uganda at the London Olympic Games. Other recognised sportsmen were footballer Daniel Serunkuma. The lad scored 17 goals that helped his side Gor Mahia finish second in the just concluded Kenya Premier League (KPL).
Serunkuma became the first foreign player to win the KPL footballer of the year award. He settled for second in the run to the golden boot and fair play award.
