Island Zanzibar may not be a big place in size but they defied odds to beat Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars 6-5 in a penalty shootout following a 1-all draw to finish third at this year’s Tusker CECAFA Challenge Cup.
In front of a fair crowd at Mandela National Stadium, Tanzania, who suffered a 3-0 loss to the Uganda at the semis, took the lead through Mwinyi Kazimoto in just 20 minutes.
But the Heroes kept looking for the equaliser and the wait paid off with five minutes to full time. It was substitute Othman Alliy who found the net and left daring fans in wild jubilations.
And Zanzibar their hands on the 10000US dollar cash prize after a 6-5 shoot out. It was won by Sabri Makame who blasted a low shot from the spot past goal keeper Juma Kaseja.
