The 2012 Rwabushenyi Chess Memorial season-ender has been called off indefinitely.Speaking to Kawowo Sports, the Uganda Chess Federation President, Vianney Luggya expressed disappointment for the participants who have missed out on this year’s event.
“I feel Sorry for the participants, but due to inadequate funds, we agreed with the sponsors that we divert the funds to the 40th World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey that were held earlier on in September”, Luggya, who is also the Public Relations Officer at Civil Aviation Authority said.
This tournament, well known for the juicy prize money at stake, was primarily scheduled to run 12-19th December at Hotel Africana was scrapped off the 2012 calendar events due to shortages of funding.
Cyril Rwabushenyi Memorial Regional Chess Championship is usually the last calendar event of the year of the Uganda Chess Federation and many of the expected chess players who would grace the tournament expressed grief not having participated.
” I have been training intensely for Rwabusenyi memorial, but am too disappointed that the tourney will not be held this year, lamented Mulago Knight’s Mike Akabo. The Rwabusenyi memorial tournament is held in commemoration of the legacy of the late Cyril Rwabushenyi, who was Chess Federation President from 1995-1998.
