ICC AFRICA WOMEN’S T20 WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

Yesterday’s Morning Results

Zimbabwe 102/8 Uganda 66/10

South Africa 133/4 Kenya 51/9

KAMPALA. Uganda will have to wait for another qualification campaign if they are to make it to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

A 33-run loss to Zimbabwe in their Africa Regional qualifiers’ match yesterday at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) grounds yesterday was enough to shut down even the least looming hopes of making it to Bangladesh in 2014.

Being their third loss in four ties, the script was completely torn for coach Henry Okecho’s girls. And all efforts against Namibia will be rendered useless as they face off in their last game today. Zimbabwe skipper Ashley Ndiraya won the toss and opted to bat. The decision was evidently the right choice as they set.

The start was poor as Ndiraya suffered a run-out in the first over with just a run on board. But the Zimbabweans uplifted their efforts. Josephine Nkomo scored 20 runs off 25 deliveries before suffered a leg before wicket (lbw) from Carol Namugenyi’s bowling action (2/3).

Pellagia Mujaji scored 18 runs off 30 before Mary Nalule (1/7) bowled her out at 63 while Mary Anne Musonda added an unbeaten 24 runs off 15 balls. In addition to the 21 extras, Zimbabwe had reached 102 runs for an eight-wicket loss after batting the allotted 20 overs.

Perhaps Naomi Kayondo and team thought it was a catch-able score compared to the huge pile of 166 runs South Africa had set on Monday. But no. The batting order collapsed at 69 runs despite batting out 19.3 overs. Opening partnership off Barbara Mukankusi (8 off 20) and Namugenyi (13 off 25) was broken by Sharyce Saili (1/3) and from then, there was a subsequent fall of wickets.

Precious Marange (4/ bowled out Scovia Akello (5 off , Kevin Apio, Gloria Adubu, and Franklyn Najjumba with no run from the latter three. Skipper Naomi Kayondo suffered run-out. Her deputy Flavia Laker scored 13 runs but they were still 33 runs short of the target.

Brilliant South Africa

South Africa A faced Kenya at Annadil Burhani Ground in Dar Es Salaam on the Third Day in the morning. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat, posting 132 for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs. Liezel Lee once again imposed on the match with an unbeaten 38 off 29 balls and Yolandi Potgieter equaling with 38 off 30.

Kenya’s openers were dismissed in the first over without posting a run. Kenya eventually lost 9 wickets for 51 in 20 overs. Sharon Juma and captain Emily Ruto top scoring with 12 and 16 respectively.
