It took top tennis player Duncan Mugabe two hours and 37 minutes to beat his rival David Oringa 7-5,6-2,(4-6)6-2 to claim the Best of the Best tennis tournament at the Center Court Sports Club,Lugogo this morning.
Mugabe, battled to a claim the first set that swung both sides on center court with him battling with his first serve to take the set 7-5, he then made his opponent run all over the court combining deep winners and drop shots to take the next set 6-2,but a rejuvenated Oringa clawed back to take the next 4-6 hoping to level in the next.
The 2011 Uganda Open winner then wrapped up proceedings on a very hot center court by claiming the set 6-2. “I must congratulate David for the good game that he exhibited and I must say he has a bright future,” Mugabe said. “It wasn’t an easy game and I am glad I battled all the way to winning my first event in the New Year.”
Oringa, the winner of last year’s Uganda Open was humble in defeat. “I have to work hard on my whole game and I have learn’t my mistakes,” he said. “I am looking forward to meeting Mugabe again in the Uganda Open this year.”
Mugabe will walk away with 500,000 and more than 3 million in prize money while Oringa will scoop 300,000 courtesy of the sponsor Center Court Sports Club, which is managed by Arthur Segawa.
The men’s consolation prize was won by William Kalega who beat Dean Kibirige 7-5,7-5.
