Unseeded Henry Muyanja gate-crashed this morning at the Castle Lite Uganda Tennis Open when he registered the first upset at the prestigious tournament at Kampala Club court three beating seed seven Ibrahim Yego Kibet in straight sets 6-4,6-4.

The 26 year old Muyanja coasted to a second surprise upset over 16 year old Kibet in a space of three weeks after registering a similar feat over Moses Otiti at the Best of the Best tennis tournament at Lugogo recently. 

 “It was a great game and I capitalised on his mistakes to overcome him,” Muyanja said. “I am looking forward to the tournament, but can’t promise that I will go on like this.”

The top seed and defending champion David Oringa, made easy work of his first round opponent Innocent Rukundo from Rwanda beating him in straight sets 6-0,6-0 as he advanced to the next round. Rwanda’s Justin Ntanerenya beat Denis Ofoyuru 6-0,6-2 while his compatriot Olivier Nkunda seed six was a 6-0,6-1 winner over Edwin Mukisa, but today’s early morning games where washed out due to heavy rain.

This year’s event that is being sponsored by Nile Breweries under their brand Castle Lite has attracted players from Rwanda,Kenya,Cameroun,Zimbabwe,Tanzania and the hosts Uganda. Castle Lite has sunk 40 million into the annual event and have also been joined by a new sponsors Housing Finance.

This year’s men’s and ladies winners will win 2.5 million and 2 million respectively together with a trophy.
