Dominic Akena has been named team skipper for the Uganda National U-20 team that will compete in the African Challenge Tournament due in Djibouti  from 6th -12th April 2013.

Akena, a prisons club player will have to shoulder the full irresponsibility  of guiding team Uganda to her maiden title on the African Handball scene. “For his experience and exceptional leadership skills on and off the court, Akena deserves the captaincy”, remarked Coach Frank Ssemujju when asked about the choice of the team captain.

Uganda is among the 8 African Nations that will vey for the top honours  in the week long competitions, which will also double as Africa’s Olympic qualifiers. Other nations are: Kenya, Nigeria, Chad, Senegal, Madagascar, Mozamibque and hosts, Djibouti.

A 14 man team has been named to represent Uganda who are the the men’s Eastern African region representatives. The team is a blend of agile and committed youngsters from Uganda’s finest clubs and handball playing institutions.

“I anticipate great results from Djibouti because the boys have had a well tune up process for the three weeks they have been training”, says team physician, Alberto Unjima.

But judging from the team’s 24-all performance against a  rusty league select side  last Friday, the team attack and defense departments have a lot of work to accomplish before facing Africa’s finest sides.

The team, which has had a two week residential training double training session at Nkumba University while staying at Entebbe Sports Beach, will depart for Djibouti on 4th April before the games start on the 6th.

The Uganda Handball Federation with assistance of International handball body are sponsoring the Ugandan contingent’s travel expenses.
