Uganda will be using the Cana Zone III and IV swimming championship as a perfect build-up to next year’s event that they be hosting. Uganda is sending a strong team of 16 swimmers for the Zambia hosted event that gets underway from April 24-28 in Lusaka.
The Uganda side that will be led by UK based Jamila Lunkuse, was handed the national flag by Professor Lillian Ekirikubinza at Sheraton Hotel swimming pool on Saturday.
Other swimmers on the team include Anthea Mudanye,Mutesi de Torrette, Edith Barton, Ann Mudanye, Maya Homisy King, Isabelle Stauden,Luke Galagher, Hezekiah Owuor, Elisha Ekirikubinza, Christopher Prinsloo, Katrina Sangalyambogo(Buganda princess), Vianney Lusimbo, Jesse Sengonzi, Rebecca Sengonzi, Jethro Sengonzi.
The team will be accompanied by head coaches Tonnie Kasujja and Ibrahim Mapetla, from the Uganda Swimming Federation.
In 2011 Uganda collected 4 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronze from the same championship held in Botswana with Lunkuse(5 medals) and Arnold Kisulo(5 medals) as the best swimmers. Uganda finished seventh out of eleven countries then.
Uganda will be vying to beat 20 countries from the Southern African region and elsewhere from Africa.
