The National Chess Championship ends this weekend (27-28 April 2013) with the last three rounds to be played at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga. FM Elijah Emojong who is leading the pack with 7.5 points out of 8 is the favourite followed closely by CM Patrick Kawuma at points.

Haruna Nsubuga also has a chance as he is trailing the leader by only one point.The winner will walk away with a prestigious trophy while the top three will represent Uganda in the Dar-es-Salaam Open due to be held from 7-9 June 2013 in Tanzania. Players from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya among others are expected to participate in the Dar es Salaam Open which will be FIDE rated and arbitrated by Uganda’s Stephen Kisuze.

Key battles this weekend include a ninth round game between Emojong against third placed Nsubuga Haruna and Kawuma Patrick against Grace Nsubuga. Later in the 11th round Wanyama will face off against Kawuma in yet another thriller that could have a bearing on determining the eventual winner.
