Leon Matovu proved he is still the man to beat in Uganda’s cycling fraternity as he rode to his third consecutive victory of the year with the 130 km Kayenta race on Sunday.

The victory was also another hat trick for Matovu, having won the event in 2011 and 2012.

It took 3 hours and 23 minutes for Matovu to complete the race that was flagged off at Bweyogerere Kazinga through to Mukono and Jinja then back. Shimano Racing Club’s Kyasa Herbert, who clocked 3 hours, 25 minutes took second place.

60 cyclists participated in the race that saw an increment in the average overall speed by 16 minutes.Under 18’s rode 60 kilometres.

“The race was a success save for the two unfortunate accidents of Kayenta’s Ssebatisian Kigongo and Mbarara’s Alex Ssemambo who picked up injuries on the way. Ayubu Kakande was also disqualified for pulling himself on a boda boda, which contrary to the regulations and rules for competitive cycling “, the race publicist, Esther Cynthia said.

This annual race was sponsored by Uganda Cycling Federation Vice President (Technical),who is also the President of Kayenta Cycling Club, John Richard Sseninde.

The next event on the calendar is the Luweero labour day race slated for May 1 in Luweero District. National Council of Sports General Secretary, Jasper Aligawesa sponsored the event last year.
