Hussein Ssekanga, a 16 year old orphan from Kawempe Division defied a strong field of 38 riders to clinch victory in the inaugural Uganda Cycling Under 17 race held in Kampala on Sunday.
Ssekanga, a member of team select just joined the sports months back and he surprised many including himself when he clocked two hours forty five minutes to finish top of the 68 km Lugogo by pass route. On the other hand, Paul Lugwana of Kampala cycling club won the 9 km U-13 category.
Esther Muwonge the Cycling Association publicist explained the importance of such under age competitions in preparation of atheletes for future enagagments.
“Such races are to prepare a strong team for the 2015 Youth Commonwealth games (in Samoa) and the Olympics in 2016, 2020 and 2024.
Uganda participated in the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games in Isle of Mann, where two riders Kiyega Richard ( Team Select) and Kyagulanyi Lawrence ( Shimano) took part.
