Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) has won the 17th Edition of the Annual Nkumba Volleyball open Championships after registering a 2-1 win over the event defending champions, Nemo Stars during a thrilling final played before a lively crowd at the Nkumba University Sports arena in Entebbe on Sunday evening.
Joel Edrwa, named the tourney’s Most valuable player combined well with veteran setter, Amon Ayinebyona to give Uganda’s oldest Volleyball club victory over the defending champions. Enroute to the finals, KAVC outwitted Sport-S 3-0 in the semifinals while NEMO Stars overcame a stubborn Sky Volleyball side, 3-1.
“This victory is a great morale booster for KAVC ahead of the forthcoming memorial tournament. I congratulate all my players for the job well done”, a jovial Hannington Nsubuga, KAVC’s coach, told Kawowo Sports media shortly after his side picked the Champions’ Trophy.
Ndejje University ladies still proved they are indomitable with triumphs in the Clubs and the institutions categories. The Elites inspired by Jesica Kaidu won all their institutions games to become round robin champions before overcoming a resistant home side, Nkumba University 2-0 in the clubs’ final.
The hosts, Nkumba University, ‘Navy’ successfully defended the men’s institutional title following a 3-0 victory over the Mukono based Uganda Christian University (UCU). Skipper, Dickens Otim (attacker) and setter, Albert Gayi were very influential in Nkumba University’s victory.
In the school’s category, Kinawa High won the Secondary schools men title while Trust High inspired by Valentine Kirabo, Tracy Kuleme and Betty Naluzze won the ladies’ version. Sun Rise Primary School claimed the boy’s and girls’ Primary School main accolades.
Various outstanding teams and players were rewarded with certificates of merit, trophies and other prizes by the Uganda Volleyball President, Sadiq Nasiwu.
The 2 day Tournament, that attracted a record over 50 teams across the country was proudly sponsored by Nkumba University Games Union and S & S Enterprises Limited, Entebbe.
