4th National Track & Field Trials- Mandela National Stadium (8 a.m)
Different athletes across the nation are more than eager to compete in the 4th National Track and Field Trials set to take place this Saturday on July 13, 2013 at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Top clubs from Jinja, Kampala, Tororo, Entebbe, Kapchorwa, Gulu, Lira, Mbarara, Mbale among others are set to send in participants. Institutions too like Prisons, Police, UPDF and learning centers are also expected to attend the trials that will begin at 8 a.m with the 10,000 metres’ race.
“This competition offers more opportunities for Ugandan athletes to qualify for the 14th World Championships due August 10-18, 2013 in Moscow, Russia”, says UAF publicist, Namayo Mawerere.
11 Ugandan athletes have already qualified for the prized Moscow World Championships. Among these is the Olympic Champion Stephen Kiprotich, Moses Kipsiro (5000m/10,000m), Nambawa Sarah (long jump), and Juliet Chekwel among others.
This Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) event had been earlier slated to take place on May 4, 2013 at the same venue but was postponed due to a police function organized inside the stadium.
At the same time, Coach Charles Mukiibi has named a team of 3 athletes for the World Youth Championships in Ukraine .Stella Chesang (3000m), Racheal Chebet Zena (3000m) and Felix Watmon (long and triple jump),together with the coach will represent the team Uganda at the games.
