Aug 10-18 World Athletics Championships (Russia)
The first batch of team Uganda’s Athletics squad will officially leave Uganda on Tuesday. The Federation has named a national team of 12 athletes to compete in the 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships due August 10-18, 2013 in Moscow, Russia.
The team has one surprise new entrant in Ronald Musagala who qualified in 800m for the lucrative Moscow event during the recent National Championships at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Rarely has any Ugandan athlete qualified at home for any major international competition.
The other athletes who had made the team include Moses Kipsiro (5000m/10,000m), Philip Kipyego (5000m), Timothy Toroitich (3000m steeplechase (SC)/10,000m), Thomas Ayeko (10,000m), Jacob Araptany (3000m Steeplechase) Benjamin Kiplagat (3000m SC), Stephen Kiprotich (Marathon), Jackson Kiprop (marathon), Abraham Kiplimo (Marathon) and women – Sarah Nambawa (Triple jump) and Juliet Chekwel (10,000m).
The team will be led to Moscow by Chief de mission Domenic Otuchet, who will also attend the IAAF Congress and Coach Benjamin Longiross.
Missing out on the team is former 3000m SC world champion Dorcus Inzikuru who is ruled out by injury. She has to rest the injury for some time on doctor’s advice until reviewed. Uganda registered over 15 qualifiers for the World Championships but specific terms for A and B qualification standards disappointed the rest.
The team to Moscow is one of the biggest representation at the World Championships.
