Ugandan rally ace Jas Mangat has taken an early lead in the 2013 Shell VPower Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally following a gallant performance on day one in a Super Special Sprint at Lubiri. Mangat who leads both the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) and National Rally Championship (NRC) beat his closest rivals after finishing the two runs in four minutes and five seconds. Kenyan Carl Tundo in a Mitsubishi Evo 9came second in four minutes and fifty seven seconds while 2012 Pearl of Africa rally champion Essa Mohammad who is eight points behind Mangat in the ARC came third after completing the two runs in five minutes.
Ronald Ssebuguzi (5.05), Giancarlo Davite (5.11), Christakis Fitidis (5.13) and Chatthe (5.14) complete the top seven after day one. Super lady Susan Muwonge is among the top ten drivers after completing the two runs in five minutes and sixteen seconds. Wycliff Bukenya is the only driver to bow out after his car got a mechanical problem and he couldn’t finish even the first run.
In the supplementary race, Kenyans Ian Duncan and Peter Horsey in their classic cars put on a great show but reports of penalties mean the duo of Omar Mayanja and Leon Ssenyange in a Toyota Allex lead that category.
The battle resumes on Saturday in eight competitive sections totaling 221 kilometres with 220 kilometres of road sections in Luwero.
