Standard Chartered Bank has today announced its support of the Uganda Sports Press Association annual road safety campaign which will be held this Saturday in Jinja.

This was announced at a joint press conference held between the two entities at the Standard Chartered Bank headquarters.

The bank that has been a partner with the sports scribes body today donated three million shillings to facilitate the organization of the road safety campaign.

“I highly commend the efforts of USPA to create awareness around road safety. This is a worthwhile initiative that Standard Chartered Bank has supported since 2007,” Cynthia Mpanga, the Corporate Affairs Manager said at the press conference at their head office on Speke Road. “We are even more passionate now about creating awareness around road safety since we lost our own staff, the late Daniel Mirembe and his entire family in an accident in Jinja in 2010.”

Statistics from Uganda Police show that is 2012 there were 19,870 accidents so this cause is more necessary as road carnage increases in our country.

USPA’s road safety campaign is in memory of their members the late Kenneth Andrew Matovu, Leo Kabunga, Simon Peter Ekarot and Dennis Batte Junior, who died in a fatal accident in Lugazi, on their return from USPA duties in Jinja.

Yesterday City Tyres handed USPA 6 million shillings for the campaign which will for the second year be held out of Lugazi town.

This year’s theme is “Arrive Alive”  the sports scribes body will also have a friendly game with the members of Standard Chartered Bank.
