Uganda’s team of Vicent Okot, Mildred Gamba, Ambrose Okello and Dickens Otim that is going for the third Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang, South Sumatera, Indonesia have this morning been flagged off by the chairman of National Council of Sports Bosco Onyik and Uganda Olympic Committee secretary general Don Rukare at the MTN Arena at Lugogo.
The team that leaves later today for the games that get underway from September 22-October 1 in Far East Asia will be led by Uganda Volleyball Federation chairman Sadik Nasiwu.
“You are the best and we want you to honorably represent us at this games,” Onyik said at the ceremony. “The team would have been bigger however we couldn’t send a much one because the National Olympic Committee sent their team late however we have given them $4,000(sh10.1m) and wish our team the best.”
Okot will be racing in triple jump and long jump while Gamba will be doing 100 and 200 metres sprints while Okello and Otim will be contesting in beach volleyball.
Uganda had scheduled to send a teams in Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Archery and Weightlifting, but they had to trim their squad due to lack of funds.
