Rwanda’s Giancarlo Davite has emerged victorious in the 2013 Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally after beating the rest of the pack in the three days event that started with a Super Special Stage at Gikondo.
The reigning Rwanda national champion clocked three hours, two minutes and seven seconds a massive twenty four minutes and thirty four ahead of second placed Mitraros (03:26:41).
Uganda’s Christakis Fitidis (03:28:26) followed by Zambian Jassy Singh (3:29:10) while Mayaka (03:30:10) completes the top five.
Only nine of the 17 cars completed the rally with Ugandans Fred Wampamba (03:56:07) and Abdu Ssempebwa (04:36:27) finishing six and nine respectively.
Amongst those who didn’t complete the event was reigning Africa Rally Championship leader Jassy Mangat who was forced to exit the rally in the second last section due to overheating of his Mitsubishi Evo 10. Nevertheless, by the time he bowed out, he was still trailing Davite despite leading on day one.
Another Ugandan Patrick Kiwewa also suffered a fatal accident in the ninth section and was unable to continue.
Mangat’s failure to complete the event widely re-opens the scramble for the 2013 Africa Rally Championship title and leaves the Madagascar rally due in October as the decider for the championship.
The reigning Ugandan champion now leads the ARC standings by just two points on 83 while Zambian Jassy Singh who earned 15 points sits second on 81 points while Davite’s win implies he surpasses Essa Mohammad who didn’t participate over the weekend and goes third on 58 points.
