South African Premiership club Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the signing of Ugandan international defender Ivan Bukenya.

The ex-Proline Proline defender has signed a two year renewable deal after impressing Coach Stuart Baxter on a two weeks trial that commenced on September 12.

The club tweeted: “Kaizer Chiefs would like to acknowledge the signing of the Ugandan International, Ivan Bukenya. We welcome him to the Family!”

“I received a warm welcome from the players and everyone at The Village,” the 22-year-old tells the club’s website.

“The captain [Itumeleng Khune] is forever happy and has been supportive. There is a spirit of love and peace in the team and I am looking forward to a great time here.”

Amakhosi football manager Bobby Motaung said: “We would like to welcome Ivan to the team. He is a quality player and has both defensive and midfield qualities.

“He is professional, age is on his side as well and we are hoping for longer relations. The coach has worked with him and is happy with what he saw.”

Bukenya whose last appearance for Uganda Cranes came in June in the 0-3 loss to Libya in an international friendly follows in the footsteps of compatriot David Obua who played for the club between 2005 and 2008.

He becomes only the third Ugandan in the PSL in the 2013/14 season joining striker Geoffrey Massa who plies his trade at Pretoria University and custodian Denis Onyango at Bidvest on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
