3-5th October 2013:
The Uganda Ladies Open,
At Entebbe Club
After a Tuesday three hour afternoon practice round of 18 holes at the par 71 lake side golf course in Entebbe, the Dar es Salaam based lady Golfer, Angel Eaton is optimistic she will successfully defend the top crown.
Eaton won the top honors at last year’s championships after returning scores of 225 gross having scored an opening day of 2 over par over 73 before carding 75 and a dismissal 77 on the second and third day of the tourney played at Kitante in 2012.
“I am really getting used to this course, and coming in early (on Monday) has helped me a lot to learn a few things here and there about this course”, the soft spoken young lady golfer tells Kawowo Sports after the Tuesday training session.
The 23 year golfer who currently stays with her grand mother in Dar es salaam has won 3 major championships this year.
Ever since claiming the Zimbabwe Ladies Open (in July), Eaten has never looked back as she won the August Mombasa Coastal Open (played over 4 couses in Vipingo, Lesiure , Nyali and Mombasa courses) and most recently the Morogoro Ladies Open. She missed the famed Tanzanian open due to illness.
Angel’s caddie, Robert Ssenteza of Uganda Golf Club says the trend of acclimatization to the course has been a gradual progress and he feels by the official tee off on Thursday, she will be more than set. “I have been showing her the course challenges, the windy effect movements and fastness of the greens, hope we shall do better when competition starts”, Ssenteza, who also caddied for Angel in 2012 Ladies’ Open says.
Speaking of her close rivals, Angel boldly asserts, golf is a game of respect for playing partners, concentration, holding back pressure and individual hard work. “The person with the ultimate great day often carries the day. I respect Flavia (Namakula), Irene (Nakalembe), Pauline (Nambi) and a host of other locally based and foreign players who will take part”, she says.
“For the final practice day, i will do the range, then i have enough rest in preparation for the Tee official Tee off”, Eaton speaks of her training programme
2012 first runners’ up, Iddi Madina (299 gross) will miss the tourney due to a tight work schedule back home.
The subsidiary will have an entry of 100 golfers that is men and women with players playing between handicap 19-36 for the first time this year lady caddy golfers are expected to take part. Pauline Nambi won the 2012 Subsidiary ladies’ category.
The Ladies Open is sponsored by Dasani Water, Orange Uganda, Bro Group and ICEA.
