2013 Uganda Ladies Golf Champion

Angel Eaton (Tanzania) – 229 Gross

Upon receiving her two giant trophies, Plasma Flat Screen and other goodies, for emerging the best at the 2013 Uganda Ladies Golf Open, Tanzanian Golfer, Angel Eaton sobbed.

Unlike the usual winners’ tears of joy, this time round, they were a mixture of delight and emotion. Joy for winning the second consecutive most prestigious ladies golf tournament  on the ladies golfing calendar, and agony for winning the 2013 tourney on the same day the father of the victor (Howard Eaton) passed on.

It was an emotional moment that most people who had gathered at the 19th hole, a special place reserved for prize giving and killing off the golf course stress almost cried too.

“I dedicate my special victory to my beloved late dad and may his soul rest in peace eternally”, the 23 year Dar es Salaam based Handicap 4 golfer spoke to Kawowo Sports minutes after the prize giving.

On the par 71 Entebbe Golf course over the 3 days, Angel reproduced the magic and form of 2012 that saw her win the ladies open at Kitante as she scored 79, 8 over par on the opening day, 76 gross to lead day two and capping up the tourney with the best score 74, 3 over par on the closing day.

Uganda’s Flavia Namakula, finished second overall having overcome a dismissal opening two days where she returned to the club house with gross scores of 80 and 83 on day 1 and 2 respectively.

“Like I stated before tee off, I was just getting used to my new putter from Nairobi, as my old one got broken, and this cost me dear, anyway, I congratulate Angel, she played great golf”, Namakula said.

Eva Magala, home girl, Irene Nakalembe and another Tanzanian, Hawa Wanyeche completed the top 5 slots. Hawa won the 2013 Tanzanian Ladies Stroke Play Golf Champioship in Arusha, in September.

Close to 35 golfers from host nation, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Zambia competed in the 54 holes’ 3 day tourney.

80 golfers contested in the subsidiary category, which was won by Peace Kabasweka on 188 gross played on Friday and Saturday.

Esther Okullo, President of the Uganda Ladies Golf Union praised the high level of commitment showed by all the competitors and urged them to keep the spirit burning.

“We hope to organize more local competitions for the ladies to keep them busy and engaged, and attract more sponsors to the game of golf in Uganda”, she told Kawowo Sports in an exclusive interview.

The 2013 Uganda Ladies Open was exclusively organized by the Uganda Ladies Golf Union in conjunction Entebbe Golf Club and proudly sponsored by Dasani Water, Orange Uganda, Bro Group and ICEA.
