Uganda raced to the top of the leaderboard on the opening round of action at the 15th edition of the East Africa Golf Challenge going on at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort in Naivasha, Kenya.
Uganda players bagged seven points out of their eight games played with captain Phillip Kasozi going 3 up against Kenya’s Justas Madoya, in a game that showed the true grit and determination from the Ugandan player with Peter Sendaula going two up against Tanzania’s Abbas Adam.
While Willy Deus Kitata was three up against Kenya’s junior golfer Daniel Nduva. Tanzania is second with 6 and half points while last year’s winners Kenya are third with 5 points while Rwanda is fourth with 3 points while new entrant Ethiopia is fifth with 2 and half points, Burundi is last with no points.
“The whole team played well and we hope to keep our composure going into tomorrow’s action,” Deo Akope, the coach of the national golf team said. “Tomorrow’s action will be more intense with the players playing Foursomes and Four Ball Better Ball.”
Uganda will be seeking for its fourth title at this prestigious East Africa team golf tournament having won it in 2001, 2009 and 2010.
“Our goal is to win it again here and then defend it in Kampala next year when we host this event, ” Akope said. “I have belief and confidence in this team and they know they can win it.”
The tournament concludes on November 1.
