30th Nov 2013: Nigeria Cross Country
Thomas Ayeko is motivated by the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Award for the Month of October.
“It gives me more hope and courage to practice harder as i prepare for the Nigerian Cross-country championships on 3rd November 2013”, the 21 year spoke to Kawowo Sports in an exclusive interview.
Ayeko received his award at the Kampala Tennis Courts at a specially organized dinner to hand the September and October sports best performers.
Handing over the glittering plaque to the Kapchorwa based athlete, legendary USPA member, Andrew Patrick Luwandagga appreciated the efforts of the long distance runner whose IAAF BUPA Great Birmingham half marathon exploits saw him beat 2012 Olympic Games 10,000M bronze medallist, Tariku Bekele to the overall top position in his maiden road race.
To clinch the October month sports personality gong, Ayeko beat Uganda Volleyball ladies team (qualified to FIVB Women Championships Qualifiers), rally driver Jas Mangat and Mawokota Ssaza football team.
“I am travelling back to Kapchorwa (On Friday) to embark on the training for the Nigerian race. I need to be fit and win again”, Ayeko, whose family lives in Bukwo said.
At the same event, Uganda’s Cross Country team in the 2013 Poland meet also received their plaque for the Month of September best performance.
The Uganda Sports Journalists (print and electronic) under their umbrella body, USPA vote for the best sports personality for every month and crown it all with glamorous sports personality for the year at a great dinner hosted by Nile Special.
