Kampala Club won the inaugural British Airways Inter-Club tennis tournament that was held at Center Court tennis club Lugogo last weekend.
Kampala Club beat their hosts Lugogo tennis club winning 13-7 in an all doubles tennis competition with individual players setting land marks on the clay courts of Lugogo.
The Kampala Club pair of veteran John Oduke and Victor Drile was the most successful pair win all their matches, but that dominance didn’t spur them to the overall crown.
Oduke’s experience was evident in his precision and control while Drile’s serve was his deadliest weapon. They beat James Tugende/ Franscesco Muciollo, Godfrey Jubilani/ John Evans and Dusko Lekic/John Evans.
Kampala Club were very successful in the ladies doubles matches. Viola Akuma and Faith Chaitezvi won all their women’s doubles matches just as Jalia Nanfuka and Hasifa Nakiganda did.
The youth match went to Kampala Clubs Edward Birungi who was by far better than Lugogo’s Edward Opio. won 9-0.
In the veterans category Jack Calnan of Kampala Club made a tremendous recovery. After trailing for most of the match, he picked up and caught up with his opponent Dr. Eugene Willis at 9-9. From that point on Calnan dominated the match which he eventually won 11-9.
One of the most dramatic matches was between James Kasumba/Ivan Kyeirembo of Lugogo and James Tugyende/Dusko Lekic of Kampala Club.
After taking off with a comfortable lead of 10-4, James and Dusko needed only one more game to win the match, unfortunately that didn’t happen for the next 6 games.
Ivan and James found their footing and leveled the match at 10-10.
The drama didn’t end there, it went to a two way game point after the second deuce which was won by Kampala Club after a number of nail biting drop shots.
