It is a chilly Tuesday morning and the effects of the misty weather conditions around the Mukono UCU main campus are felt and evidently envisaged as a cross section of people near and far have either wrapped scarves or donned heavy woolen cloth.
I start to envision the face of that infamous sex tape girl, who for the record, damaged the otherwise great image of this learning institution, currently making 100 years of existence.
As the thoughts go on in my inner personality, my cell phone vibrates – an alert from Sudi Ulanga, a star basketballer with the University side, UCU Canons that features in the Ugandan National Basketball League.
Its Joy unlimited deep inside me as I am sure that at long last (after 2 weeks of desperate chase), my awaited appointment with the Dar es Salaam born national has actually come to pass.
A warm smile and a firm handshake guarantees my safety as the discussion gets underway. “I was born in Dar [Dar es Salaam, Tanzania], studied Secondary education in Nairobi and currently having university life In Mukono”, he opens up with a wild grin flashing across his face.
As we get along, I discover he is one of those rare Valentine’s Day off-springs. Born on that famous 14th February date — a special day reserved for passionate souls across the globe, Sudi is never afraid to express his undying love for his fiancee.
“My happiest moment in life is when am with my family and girlfriend (Sandra ‘Munduru’ Lou) while losing a basketball game casts a dark patch on life”, Sudi, who first featured for Falcons basketball club in the 2011 season before transferring to the Mukono based institution said.
Mid December, UCU is preparing to host the 15th Inter-University games, Sudi Ulanga and his Canon teammates are playing to grab gold. “This is the best time to avenge the near loss of the basketball league title”, he says of the games that will attract 23 universities from across every corner of Uganda.
Sudi is not only flamboyant on the courts of basketball he too reserves a great deal of quality time to his books and the lover. “Its love and basketball, you know”, his signs off with his trademark smile.
