National Council of Sports Official in charge of technical matters, Zubair Galiwango has expressed sympathy at the rate by which Ugandan sportsmen get injuries, the time lag of rehabilitation and the eventual full recovery procedure which is not well laid out.

Galiwango expressed his concerns at the closure of the 4 day Uganda Olympic Committee medical medical workshop held at the Daisy Hall in Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

“You look at an injury sustained by William Nkemba (former footballer), if he had been well attended to, he would have continued with the game”, Galiwango said.

The workshop was attended to by over 30 participants from at least 15 sporting disciplines of Football, Netball, Swimming, Cycling, Rugby, Handball, Rowing,  are participating.

The facilitators of the course were Doctors: Kadoodoba, Emmanuel Ewochu, Robert Opoka, Micheal Aleku while Christopher Oluka, and Sarah Kato (WADA Certified doping control officers) handled the doping cases.

The participants ran through cross section of topics to include Olympic movement concept and Olympic Games.

Other topics are Basic Life support, Olympic movement medical code, protecting movement medical code, protecting the child athlete from all forms of sports injuries, role of a sports doctor in modern day sports management, practical sessions (basic life support), physiotherapy, WADA anti-doping – role of athlete, coach and team physician, food supplements, role of radiography in examination of sports injuries, rehabilitation after injury, use of food supplements, diet and sports nutrition.

“The sessions were worthwhile and by the close of business on the final day, i had really learnt alot to take back to my Rowing federation”, Rodrick Muhumuza, the official who represented the water sport of rowing told Kawowo Sports in an interview after the workshop.

Recently, The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) and Aga Khan Hospital signed a 3 year renewable  medical agreement. The agreement will help Uganda’s athletes, both amateurs and the professional access quality medical help at a relatively cheaper cost at the Aga Khan Hospital and Clinic situated right in the heart of Kampala City at Diamond Trust Building.
