1st Quarter-Finals: Uganda 2 (2) – Tanzania 2 (3)

Despite coming from a goal down to equalize against the 10 man Kilimanjaro stars, CECAFA record champions, Uganda have been ejected out of the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge cup in a pulsating match, proceeded by a minute silence for the fallen Pan African Nelson Mandela, played at the Mombasa based Municipal Stadium.

A beautiful brace from Tanzanian danger man, Mwrisho Ngassa had put Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars in a well deserved lead by the first opening 45 minutes of the first quarter finals played under very hot conditions of the Kenyan Coastal town.

Diminutive Gor Mahia striker, Dan Sserunkuma put Uganda in a 16th minute well deserved lead following a beautifully laid low ball down the right flank from Hamis ‘Diego’ Kizza.

But a lapse in the Uganda back line shortly after the game re-start cost Uganda dear. Yanga winger cum striker, Mwrisho Ngassa was in the right place and the right timing as he easily tapped home the equalizing goal, just after one minute of Cranes’ celebrations.

However, Uganda fought gallantly, having replaced the industrious Said Kyeyune (in for Joseph Mpande at the half-way mark) Defender, Martin Mpuga equalized for Uganda in the 73rd minute.

In the penalty shoot-out, team skipper, Patrick Kelvin Yondani, Frank Raymond Domayo and Ramadhan Kiemba scored for the successful Kilimanjaro stars who played close to 30 minutes of the second half with 10 men after Salum Abubaker had been sent for an early shower by the Somalian man in black, Wish Yabarow. Defender, Erasto Edward Nyoni and TP Mazembe’s striker, Mbwana Samata had their efforts saved by Goalie, Benjamin Ochan.

Uganda, who missed the services of defender, Savio Kabugo (replaced by Martin Mpuga) due to a bout of malaria successfully scored 2 penalty kicks through Kizza Hamis and Emmanuel Okwi while SC Villa left back, Godfrey Walusimbi, Tusker’s Aucho Khalid and the hardworking Gor Mahia forward, Danny Sserukuma who had scored game’s opener missed their penalty kicks.

The Kilimanjaro Stars face the winner between Rwanda and hosts, Kenya in the second quarter-finals.
