Ugandan dribbling ace, Martin Mutumba Kayongo’s 3 year honey moon at Swedish Club AIK ceased on Monday as he penned a 2 year deal with Turkish newly promoted super league side, Caykur Rizespor.
Kawowo Sports reliably confirms the move of Mutumba, 28, who has spent close to three weeks of trial matches at the Turkish sports club based in Rize.
A statement on the Çaykur Rizespor website indicates that Mutumba penned a 2 and half year’s deal and the Ugandan is now ready to don the club’s blue-green jerseys although the financial details of the contract are yet to be made public.
Since 1990, the team has been sponsored by the Turkish tea company Çaykur hence the name and the image of a tea leaf on the club’s logo. Rizespor changed their name to Çaykur Rizespor, ahead of the 1990–91 season. The club will be participated next season at Süper Lig after promoting from TFF First League in the2012–13 season.
Mutumba joins the Nigerian duo of striker, Uche Kalu and defender Godfrey Oboabona at the club. Mutumba has previously played his club football at academy side, Vasalunds IF, before crossing over to Cafe Opera United, Vasby United, Videoton fc and lately AIK, where he has been a crowds’ favorite famous his match winning performances and flicks on the balls.
National Team Career:
In 2002, Mutumba featured for the Swedish national team Under 17 team in two of their matches, scoring no goal for the team.
In January 2012, Mutumba got a Ugandan passport and was summoned in the Uganda national team squad that faced Congo Brazzaville in the Africa Cup of Nations (2013) qualifiers. However, he didn’t play spending all the 90 minutes on bench.
Later in June that year, Mutumba made his debut in the Uganda national team that played an away World Cup (2014) qualifier with Angola on 3 June 2012. He has since played 6 games and recently sent shock waves after he hinted he would be resigning from national team duties after stints of being neglected on the bench.
