It is a beautiful Wednesday morning and like any other virgin day, the expectations of a ripe 12 hours are high on my agenda.
Luckily so, an appointment with Uganda’s multi-talented lady sporting icon comes to pass as after a 5 minute wait, i see my visitor from a distance.
Her Smile compliments the attire. Donned in a white top and a red skirt, Peace Proscovia, a netball cum basketball player is a lady woman giant. The warm hug and firm handshake that follows thereafter makes me feel at home.
“For am honored to be hosted”, the opening remark from the celebrity completes her unique degree of humility.
For Starters, Peace Proscovia has won the netball top players’ award for a record 5 times with league honors and four corresponding Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) gongs.
The Warid Tower:
For her unique height, Peace is nick-named ‘Warid’ by the netball faithfuls. “Hajjati Fatia Kitaka gave me that name after seeing my height. She said i have the clearest signal like that of warid and ever since that time, people call me so”, visibly excited Peace opens up.
Born 24 years ago to Mr George Agondua and Miss Winfred Amaguru at Arua Hospital, Peace, who plays netball, basketball, short put, volleyball and javelin grew up a humble girl and traversed 4 different primary schools to complete her primary leaving certificate.
“My mother was a teacher. Her transfers made me change schools like shoes”, she says. But she eventually settled in Mvara Secondary School for her O and A level education before completing her development studies diploma and Business administration degree at Nkumba University and Uganda Christian Universities respectively.
At the moment, Peace juggles her masters’ education with the netball and basketball glittering careers. “It is up to time management and programming”, she reveals when tasked to elucidate how she has successfully managed to balance education and sports.
Tough Times with Netball Cranes:
Peace openly comes out to bemoan the manner by which the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) has acted to throw the game to the dogs. “Preparations have always come at the last minute but we have not disappointed either. When we traveled over 5000 kilometers for the Nations Cup Championships in Malawi, that was a manifestation these people (netball administrators) rush and do not plan for events early on”, Peace boldly says.
She pays a glowing and an emotional tribute to the late Margret Bisereko, one of the founder pillars of netball in the country. “May her soul rest in eternal peace” she laments with tears this time rolling down her cheeks.
Bright Future:
She is however quick to add that once the house is put in order, parity will be restored to the olympic sport of netball. ” I am sure, if adequate preparations are undertaken, sponsors sought well in time, motivation id given to the girls, netball will be a game taken to the next level”, Peace won signs praise of Hajjati Fatia Kitaka, one person she takes as her ‘mother’ concludes.
