The first motorsport event of the year 2014 is set to take place this Sunday, 19th January at Nabugabo Sand beach. The event has been organised to fundraise for Haji Mikidadi Katongole, a rally driver whose car burnt to ashes last year in the Kalangala Islands.
On that fateful Saturday 26th October, Katongole had just finished competing in the Drivers’ Day Out race organised as ‘a thank you’ to rally fans, waiting for his car to be shipped on the ferry back to Kampala, when he realised fire coming from one the rear tyres.
Katongole immediately started calling for help but unfortunately, not much could be done by the few people around, and by the time the fire was extinguished, the damage had already been done.
After his quest for what had really caused the fire, the Masaka-based driver concluded that the fire could have been a result of friction between one of the shock absorbers and a tyre.
Since then, Katongole’s participation in motorsport events was halted after the misfortune.
Today, Haji Mikidadi has hope he will be back soon since several drivers including Duncan Mubiru, Nasser Mutebi, Geofrey Nsamba and John Burrows Lumu who were recently banned and later allowed to return to the sport have confirmed participation, in a move to raise approximately 150 million Shillings for him to purchase a new Subaru N11 or N10. The2013 CRC Champion Jonas Kansiime has promised to compete in the same event.
