National and Olympiad Chess Championships

The first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers which will also be the National Chess Championship featuring only players without international ratings is set to be played this weekend Saturday 18 – Sunday 19 January 2014 at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga starting at 8.30 am.
Youngster Richard Tugume who recently won the unrated section of the Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship is one of the players to watch but will face competition from the likes of Simon Gonza and Malcolm Etolu among others.
“The Uganda Chess Federation has been merged the Qualifiers with the National Chess Championship and this will go through three phases”, statement released by the federation secretariat reads in part.
From the first phase, the top 20 unrated players will be picked to join rated players in the second phase to be played on 18, 19 and 21 April 2014. After the second phase, the top 12 will proceed to the third and final round robin phase scheduled for 1st to 4th May 2014 from which the National team to represent Uganda at the World Olympiad in Norway will be selected. The Olympiad is due for 1 – 14 August 2014 in Tromso, Norway.
The winner of the final phase will also become the National Champion.
Registration for participation in the event is at 10,000 Uganda Shillings per player. Players need to register in advance by sending mobile money to 0772-497179 and 0702-497179.
