Kenyan Moses Andiwoh staged an outstanding performance with 5.5 points out of the possible six as the first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers/National Chess Championship concluded at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga.
The Kenya’s guest participant, Moses Andiwoh rose to the occasion to clinch victory unbeaten with 5.5 points out of a possible 6.
He was followed by another guest participant youngster Benjamin Mukumbya with 5 points. Mukumbya, who is fresh from the World Youth Chess Championship is now an internationally rated player. He was therefore considered as a guest participant because the event was essentially held for unrated players to determine the top 20 male that will proceed to the second phase of the Qualifiers (tentatively scheduled for Easter Weekend) and join the rated players.
The event’s trophy therefore eluded the first two guest participants and went to the best unrated player in the event and that was third placed Simon Gonza, who finished with 4.5 points out of 6.
This is so because the event was specifically for unrated Ugandan players and an Olympiad Qualifier as well as National Championship qualifier. The guest participants were only allowed to play for purposes of enhancing competition and according them an opportunity for practice too.
