With two more weekends of rugby action to be played, Kampala Old Boys (KOBS) Rugby Club have already clinched the 2013/14 Nile Special Rugby Premiership title.
The affirmation, received with joy unlimited across the KOB’s faithful followed the team’s superb 34 – 3 victory over the Ezee Money Rhinos at the Kampala Legends Rugby grounds on Saturday while their closet challengers to the gong, MTN Heathens squeezed a hard fought bonus point –less 16 – 10 win at the Kyadondo grounds.
The league victory coming at an opportune time when the team is marking her 50 years of existence is a true manifestation of hard work and commitment from a crop of talented players at the Legends based club.
Against the Rhinos, another Oscar Kalyango’s man of the match inspired performance for the Kobs and he won the game for the men in blue and white.
In the earlier game played at the Legends, G4S Pirates relegation worries were temporarily solved following that 72 – nil win over the whipping boys, Lira Bulls.
Victor Wadia was red carded for a stamping foul on a Rhino’s player, who was grounded but the 14 men gallantly fought and recoded a memorable victory.
The result means that the Bulls have now shipped in an embarrassing 936 points and scored only 59 and are the only team to have officially booked the relegation ticket as the Uganda Rugby Union restructures the teams’ setting from 8 to 6.
At Entebbe Secondary School grounds, the Sadolin Mongers who had drawn 19 all with the Rhinos in a rare rugby stalemate the previous weekend registered a hard fought 36-32 victory over the Mutoni Warriors in a game the kicking wizard, Adrian Wasswa once again won the match of the match gong following a superb performance.
The Kyadondo derby was taken by the MTN Heathens with that narrow 16 – 10 over the ‘brothers’, Toyota Buffaloes. The latter led 7-3 by half time before man of the match, Evans Kingisha and team skippered, Michael Wokocrach got the yellow boy’s tries to restore atleast some pride.
Next weekend presents the real test for champions elect, Kobs as they face the Heathens. Will the Heathens wish to spoil the party celebrations for the KOBS or will the champions continue with their incredible season all year long?
Your guess is as good as mine, lets be there at Kyadondo rugby grounds, Saturday 8th Feb 2014
