Six tags Otim, Okello, Pajije, Busingye, Selector Jay and Castle Lite beer dominated the initial 2014 maiden National Castle Lite Beach Volleyball circuit played at the Entebbe based windy Lido beach resort on Sunday.
The top seeded pair of Dickens Otim and Ambrose Okello embarked on their previous form of the year past in scintillating fashion as the duo outsmarted a strong field of 46 other male players including the seasoned pair of Hannington Nsubuga and Isaac Omdo (in the f) pooled in three groups.
“It is great to start the year on a winning note. Our team chemistry has really developed for the better and I hope we play like this for the entire year”, Dickens Otim told Kawowo Sports in an exclusive interview shortly after the prize giving ceremony presided over by Music guru, Selector Jay and the Volleyball President, Sadiq Nasiwu.
The ladies’ category (same entry as the men’s) was won by the pair of Sharon Pajije and Peace Busingye who easily overcame the hard fighting duo of Margaret Namyalo and Shamimu Makongoro in 2 straight sets 21-8 and 21-12 scores.
Several players on the national ladies’ team, like Christine Alupo, Flavia Nandawula. Astride Agaba, who have been on a European training camp (In Groningen Holland) missed the opening round.
The playing format of the national beach volleyball circuit has been altered from one to two days, to accommodate the ever escalating number of entries prior the competition.
“The water levels affected us last year, so we reduced the number of courts on the sand and this meant we shall have two playing days per circuit”, Mohfat Masaba elucidated of the increase of playing days from one to two per every competition.
On a special note, Kampala City is set to host a special beach volleyball circuit in early March this year. “We shall carry sand to a place within Kampala that we are yet to identify”, Masaba says.
The next circuit of the national beach championship resumes on the 29th and 30th March 2014.
