Gor Mahia (Kenya) 1-0 US Bitam (Gabon)

Uganda Cranes striker Daniel Sserunkuma scored the only goal of the game as Kenyan champions Gor Mahia earned a narrow win over Gabon side US Bitam in the first leg of the preliminary round match played at Nyayo stadium.

The ex-Victors, Express FC and Nairobi City Stars striker scored from the spot on the 76th mark after his shot on goal was handled in the area.

Sserunkuma’s goal was the first for Gor Mahia in continental competitions after failure to at least score on three consecutive attempts.

Gor Mahia Coach Bobby Williamson was impressed with his side’s performance despite a narrow win insisting the side showed character and keeping a clean sheet was a great job.

“I’m satisfied with the performance of the team. We managed to keep a clean sheet and scored which is very crucial in such a tournament,” Williamson said as quoted by Futaa.com,

“We will now work on improving some few things before the second leg. I hope we register a good performance during the second leg too,” he added.

Ugandans Cranes defender Godfrey Walusimbi and midfielder Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito featured for the Kenyan champions while Israel Emuge was an unused substitute.

The teams will battle in the second leg in Gabon on Saturday 15 February to decide who qualifies for the next stage.

Gor Mahia need to avoid defeat to go through.
