The Uganda sevens Rugby Cranes are in search for over Ush 60M as the ladies’ team prepares for the 2014 CAR Africa Women’s Cup Sevens championship to be held in Machakos, Kenya.
Speaking to Kawowo Sports at Kyadondo rugby ground, where the team trains from, team captain Brenda Kayiyi said that “We are looking for over sixty million to enable the team participate in the tournament in Machakos”.
The team has tried to search for sponsors ahead of the tournament but efforts are in vain. Most of the players were seen at Heathens vs Kobs game holding boxes to fundraising money for the national team. “We have now resorted to fundraising money in this way” Kayiyi while holding a fundraising box, continued to say.
Due to the financial crisis, the team trains three times a week — Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. “We train only thrice a week and most times there is no drinking water for the girls”. She also said. “Most of us come far away from here (training ground) and some times we don’t get transport money to take us back home”. She added.
This year’s tournament will feature eight teams namely South Africa, Tunisia, Senegal, Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Namibia. Kenya replaced Morocco who failed to host the event as earlier scheduled due to logistical problems. The event originally scheduled for March will now be played in April.
Meanwhile, Lady Rugby Cranes centre Aisha Nakityo sustained a neck injury during training at Kyadondo Rugby club in Lugogo. According to team coach Anthony Kinene, Nakityo went for a scan to evaluate the injury.
