KAMPALA. It was always going to be hard for the Lady Volleyball Cranes to try and impose themselves as one of the finest volleyball nation on this continent. At least not now when Kenya, Egypt and Algeria still treat the game like their lives depend on it.
For the third straight time, Kenya whitewashed Uganda to remind the youthful side that they might have a bright future but the present clearly belongs to the former. “We have a very good young side,” head coach Tony Lakony would say every time he was asked about his teams’ chances of defying the odds and qualifying for the finals.
“Most of these girls are below 25 years old, which means they are going to play for Uganda for a very long time,” he would add on. Uganda lost 3-0 to Kenya (25-16, 25-10 and 25-14) on Sunday to taunt the former’s chances of claiming a world championship slot on their first asking.
Lakony then said: “It has happened and we have to look forward. We are going to bridge the gaps and focus on a win.”
Seychelles was in Uganda’s way and the side came from two sets down to defeat Seychelles 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, and 15-12). With Tunisia and Senegal the other opponents for Uganda, the youthful Lady Volleyball Cranes can only try and leave the qualifier with positives.
