Over 150 pugilists who took to Lugogo Arena on Monday, for the week-long National Open Boxing Championship will not only focus on representation at this years July Glasgow Commonwealth games.
The boxers also seek chance, among the few slots available for the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships to be hosted in Sofia, Bulgaria’s largest city and capital due 10-20 April.
According to Uganda Boxing Federation’s Fred Kavuma, the best 40 youth pugilists will be summoned to take part in the National trials in a bid to possibly carry national flag for the U19 biennial competition to be held at the Armeec Arena.
This highly anticipated event commenced in 2008 Guadalajara, Mexico having replaced the World Junior Championships which ran from 1979 to 2006. It has been held twice since, in Baku, Azerbaijan (2010) and Yerevan, Armenia (2012).
