East Coast Boxing Club emerged overall victors beating Uganda People’s Defence Forces in the National Open Boxing Championships that climaxed on Sunday evening, at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The Naguru based boxing club (East Coast) won 2 bouts and lost 3, gathering 53 points, 4 points ahead of UPDF who finished second.

UPDF Boxing club won 3 gold medals for the heavy, middle and bantam weights, but could not sum up to the victors, thanks to their knock out round points advantage.

Taban Hassan and Kassim Muhammed spurred East Coast to victory, both winning at the Super heavyweight and Flyweight categories.

The East Coast boxing club triumph now rewrites history, becoming the first club to win the Novices, Intermediate and national Open Championships since the revival of the sport after several years of wrangles.

Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) will select 40 boxers who have excelled, to compete in the national trials later this month, in preparation for the AIBA World Youth Championships due April 10th to 20th in Sofia, Bulgaria.
