As Betty Nabifo flashes  a smile across her face when she rows on the calm waters of Lake Victoria , it is very difficult to predict that deep inside her heart is embedded a dark patch full of sorrowfulness.

An interactive one on one unearths the plight side of the rowing star as she even breaks down as I probe further about her education status.

Nabifo, one of the most promising female rowers in Uganda has not attended school this entire year as she dropped out of school in S.3 last year.

She was one of the star attractions at the recently concluded East and Central rowing championships that was held at Kisubi beach.

A limping Nabifo, who nursed  a strained ankle throughout the championships taking advantage of Constance Mbambu’s absence to clinch gold in the ladies’ single scull event and silver in the doubles, to help her home club Maroons rowing team to win the East and Central rowing championships at Kisubi beach (March 7th – 9th 2014).

“If chance comes by, I would wish to attend school once again. I left school last year after some problems but I wish I could at least complete senior 4”, the former Sacred Hearts Luzira student cries out.

Young Single Mother:

Nabifo was forced out of school after she got pregnant and she successfully gave birth to a daughter, Phillium, who is now one year old.

She currently stays alone in Luzira after the father of her daughter shunned responsibility as she looks to rowing as a career and source of livelihood.

“I request for any one with assistance to come to my rescue, I am ready to juggle education and the rowing career to live a better life in future”, she appeals.

Nabifo has represented Uganda at the Nairobi Rowing Challenge (in 2011) and has now participated in 2 national regattas (both held at Miami beach).

She is a double silver medalist at the two regattas and added another set of gold (single scull) and silver in the double scull events.
