Maria Difonzo, playing off handicap 20 overcame a slippery course and a strong field of over 100 golfers to score a gross score of 89 (69 Nett) and claim the 2014 lady captain’s main prize at the par 72 Uganda Golf Club, Kitante in Kampala on Saturday.
“I improved hole by hole as play continued. When I birdied hole 15 then I realized atleast a prize was in sight for me”, a smiling Difonzo remarked in her victory speech at the 19th hole during the prize giving ceremony.
The event that started on Monday with the caddies’ tournament, then continued on Friday (with the Golf professionals’ category) and finalized on Saturday with the men’s subsidiary event and real ladies’ final do that attracted close to 120 ladies.
It was organised by the out-going lady captain Aggie Konde Asiimwe, who was recently replaced by Kathy Kabenge.
“It is being an honor to work with all of you people and we shall continue to work hand in hand in a bid to make taskss executed in a record time”, Konde said in a brief speech.
Uganda professional captain, Deo Akope was the overall winner in the paid category, to take home a lion’s share of the handsome Ug.shs 5 M stake. Akope shot under par – 71 to take first place. Brian Mwesigwa (73), Jinja-based Saidi Mawa (74), Opio Onito (74) and Dennis Anguyo (74) finished second, joint third and fifth respectively.
Godfrey Mande made the money cut after he shot four-over-par 76 to finish joint sixth alongside Entebbe Greens’ keeper George Olayo, the 2008 Uganda Golf Open Winner. A total of 16 professionals took part in the Friday action.
Issah Faroq won the men’s caddie event with Hadijjah Nampijja claiming the women’s version. The 2014 event was jointly sponsored by NTV Uganda, Aqua Sipi, ICEA and Serena Hotel, Kampala.
