Buganda’s sports minister, Henry Ssekambembe has urged all the people within and out of the kingdom to register in large numbers ahead of the race slated for next weekend.
“I call upon everybody, young and old, rich or poor, educated and the non educated to come up in massive numbers for the cause of running to aid Fistula victims”, a jovial Ssekambembe urged.
Already, the registration rate is promising with musician, Bobi Wine, officially registering for the inaugural race that is planned as a celebration of Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s 57th birth day on Wednesday.
At least Ush 500M is expected from over 2000 runners who are willing to participate in the 5km, 10km and 21 km races that will be held on 6th April 2014.
Fistula Cause:
According to the organizing committee team headed by the Kingdom’s Minister of Sports, Henry Ssekabembe, the race is targeted to help victims of the fistula disease.
“Fistula is a silent killer in Uganda. We have got a desire to help out on this cause”, Ssekabembe tells Kawowo Sports. Several corporate companies like Airtel Uganda, Rwenzori Mineral Water, Barclays Bank, Mulago Hospital, Nsambya Hospital, Mukwaya Medical Center, Nsambya among others have come on board to support the race promotional strategies.
About Fistula
In medicine, a fistula is an abnormal connection or passageway between two epithelium-lined organs or vessels.
It is generally a disease condition, but a fistula may be surgically created for therapeutic reasons. According to Doctor Mukwaya, Buganda Kingdom’s Minister of Heath, atleast 200,000 women in Uganda today are victims of fistula that results from complicated births, rape among other causes.
